The 2021 K League 1 will be the 39th season of the top division of professional football in South Korea. Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors are the defending champions. Teams promoted from the 2020 K League are Jeju United and Suwon FC. Busan Park got relegated as well as Sangju Sangmu, who have been refounded in Gimcheon Sangmu because of re-establishment and thus have to compulsively move into the second division, have been relegated to K League 2.
From now on, K League teams are allowed to do five substitutes. In order to be able to use all five substitutes, a team has to include at least two U-22 players in the match sheet, and one of them has to start. If the team only starts one U-22 player, one of five substitutes must be used for a U-22 player, if not the number reduces to three. If a U-22 player is included in the starting eleven but no U-22 players are on the bench, the available substitutes also reduce to three. If no U-22 players are included in the initial lineup, only two substitutes are allowed.
